The history of Sarbreenar

Sarbreenar rises from the ashes

FFORTS to rebuild the town as a city were hampered by the loss of much of the town’s wealth, but the survivors were cautiously optimistic that they could rebuild. A flooded defensive ditch and rubble wall were re-established around the centre of the town but they were slow to be completed.

The north side of the town still lay in ruins and hasn’t been fully re-populated. Some of the lowlifes of the city squatted there and even set up small businesses. A band of mercenaries and malcontents set up a temporary camp outside the north walls. It wasn’t an area to walk through alone at night.

Businesses grew and thrived close to the main gate where the merchants’ caravans stop overnight as they travel between Ravens Bluff and Procampur. The Elk’s Roost Inn, the wheelwright, the livery stable and the secure warehouses started to do a roaring trade. Guilds became well established in the town and they are represented on the High Council.

Many of the miners and sheep farmers who used to live outside the town walls chose to move lock, stock and barrel into the security that the growing city can provide. They travel out to their mines and their flocks every morning.

Basilican, The Minister for Spiritual Affairs established an enclosed compound where recognised religions can set up shrines or build small temples in an organised manner for their worshippers. The whole compound is a beautifully landscaped area which serves as a haven for visiting druids. A large temple to the Sarbreenar Triad – Tempus the Lord of Battle, Torm the True and the Brave, and Tyr Grimjaws was built and a smaller temple to Sune Firehair was erected adjoining a discreet Shrine of One Thousand Delights.

There was a ‘mage’s tower.’ It belonged to a man who styled himself the Shadow Mage, who hasn’t been seen for quite some time ... so of course every adventuring band this side of Waterdeep who happens through the city thinks his tower holds unguarded plunder with their names waiting on it. Not a few folk in Sarbreenar seem to delight in whispering tales of the old tower when they think adventurers’ ears are a-flapping.

Although Lord Darian Lightsblood was lost presumed dead, the Lightsblood Family of Sarbreenar remains in power and maintain order in the growing city through the High Council. Law was implemented by the Judiciary and by Krakov Great Axe the Captain of the Town Guard.

Among the most wealthy in the vicinity, are Lord Thalmir of Mossbridges (a powerful human wizard), Lord Malaph Serpentshield of Dark Hollow (a reknowned human warrior), and Lady Estele Greymantle of Highbank Forest (a human cleric of Eldath, dedicated to nurturing and rebuilding woodlands within her holding).

Although orcs and various monsters continued to infest the mountains, raiding down into The Vast now and then (especially during harsh winter weather), human rule of The Vast seemed assured for now and for years to come.
