The politics of the Vast

THE political relationships of Sarbreenar are finely balanced, as it is a frontier region, positioned between major powers.

The City of Xorhun

Sarbreenar has become a good ally to her trading partner – the city of Xorhun. Xorhun is located a long way south of Sarbreenar, across the seas. It lays at the edge of the Halondar Valley, surrounded by the Aphrunn Mountains to the south-east, the Orsraun Mountains to the south-west, west, and north-west. On two occasions Sarbreenar has come to the rescue of the city and many Sarbreenites wear a star signifying they heroism in the defence of Xorhun.

Due to its situation on a well travelled road through Turmish, linking Hlondeth in the south to Alaghon in the north, Xorhun has become a major trader in goods, sending out it’s wares all around the Sea of Fallen Stars, and beyond. It is particularly rich in masterwork items

Sembian Coat of ArmsSembia

Many well known citizens of Sarbreenar originally came from Sembia, so naturally political relations are good but the cities of the Dragon Coast are regarded as too lawless and too soft on the pirate scum who maintain a strong presence on the Sea of Fallen Stars. Sarbreenar often petitions Sembia to crack down on the pirate fleets.

Cormyr

Cormyr is seen as a good ally and trading partner. Azoun of Cormyr was highly regarded for his stand against the Tuigan invasion. Who knows what will become of the kingdom now he is dead. The poitical instability may be an indirect threat to Sarbreenar.

The Moonsea

The Moonsea is considered to be home to spies and charlatans. Mulmaster is an abiding threat to the security of The Vast. Visitors from the Moonsea are viewed with great suspicion.

The Unapproachable East

It is well known that all evil originates in the far east. The Red Wizards of Thay are supposedly neutral but one of their number has taken it upon himself to try to destroy Sarbreenar. However some strange and fascinating wonders come from the East, too.

Nearby settlementsOther towns and cities of The Vast –

Calaunt

A medium sized city that is ruled by the Supreme Sceptre Bellas and the six Merchant Dukes. He protects the city with the standing army of 6,00 strong and a navy to keep pirates at bay. The gates to the city are guarded by six stone golems.

The city is a lawless place, blighted by a strong guild of thieves, known as the Shadowcloaks and an unhealthy collection of sorcerers. The Temple of Loviatar is known as The House of Scarlet Hooks.

The city is the third largest in The Vast but it is a depressing collection of slums and rundown businesses.

High Haspur

High Haspur is an alpine village in the heights of the mountains between Ravens Bluff and Procampur.

High Haspur has been aided by Sarbreenar in the past and in turn, the gnomes of High Haspur have ridden to Sarbreenar’s aid when it was under siege.

The Morninglight clan of gnomes have ruled High Haspur for many years. They are excellent politicians and maintain good relations between humans and dwarves. Fankolin Morninglight is currently the head of the clan.

The Thieves Guild of High Haspur has operated directly against the interests of Sarbreenar in the past and remains under scrutiny of certain factions in Sarbreenar.

Hlintar

A Master Merchant rules in Hlintar and his policies are designed to encourage the local economy and the sale of pigs and horses to other towns and cities in The Vast.

Hlintar is hated by dwarves. No dwarf will enter the town. A dreadful betrayal took place here over a hundred years ago and it is still unforgiven by the dwarven people. Sarbreenar has a large dwarven population and this means that relations with Hlintar are strained to breaking point.

Ravens BluffRavens Bluff

Sarbreenar relies on the trade from Ravens Bluff. It lays to the north and is the nearest large city. Ravens Bluff is similar in character, being largely populated by adventurous frontierspeople who have taken part in driving back the goblinoid hordes. Lord Blacktree rules the city and he has come to the aid of Sarbreenar in the past when it was under attack. Similarly Sarbreenar has a military obligation to guard the southern approach to Ravens Bluff and keep the trade route open..

ProcampurProcampur

Sarbreenar depends on the trade with the ancient independent city-state of Procampur. It is the richest in The Vast. Its strong army protects its valuable trade from predators. In the past it has defeated both Sembia and Mulmaster! Procampur now has a strong alliance with the nearby city of Tsurlagol.

Rendath of the Royal Blood is the hereditary overlord of the city and he maintains a strict and orderly rule over the city. By Royal Decree eight districts divide the city into discrete areas for trade and habitation.
